Athletech News: Why Combat Sports Are Fitness’ Most Promising Vertical

As demand for boxing, Jiu-Jitsu and MMA-inspired training grows, UFC GYM sees an expanding fitness category with significant room ahead.

Combat sports have moved from the edges of fitness culture into the mainstream—and UFC GYM believes the category is still in the early rounds of its growth.

In a recent feature, Athletech News spoke with Donnie Oliver, EVP of Fitness and International Franchise at UFC GYM, about the forces driving increased interest in boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, kickboxing and MMA-inspired fitness.

The trend represents more than growing awareness of combat sports. It points to changing expectations from fitness consumers—and an opportunity for fitness businesses capable of delivering an experience beyond traditional gym access.

From Niche to Mainstream

As UFC has grown into a global sports and entertainment brand, consumer familiarity with combat sports has grown alongside it.

Oliver has watched that transformation firsthand, from UFC’s earlier days to today’s mainstream media presence. That increased exposure has helped make combat training more approachable for a much broader audience, including adults looking for a new fitness challenge and parents enrolling their children in Jiu-Jitsu, boxing and kickboxing.

For UFC GYM franchise owners, that creates an opportunity to participate in a category with growing consumer awareness while operating under one of the most recognizable brands in combat sports.

Creating Deeper Member Engagement

Combat sports also offer a compelling characteristic from an operator’s perspective: progression.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students, for example, work toward stripes and belts over a journey that can span years. Oliver points to UFC GYM members who have trained multiple times per week for nearly a decade on their way to earning a black belt.

That type of long-term progression can create a level of engagement that’s difficult to replicate in a purely transactional fitness experience.

Members aren’t simply completing workouts. They’re developing skills, reaching milestones, building relationships and becoming part of a community.

A Differentiated Fitness Offering

UFC GYM combines combat sports programming with the familiar elements consumers expect from a modern fitness facility, including strength, cardio, functional training and coaching.

That combination can lower the barrier to entry for consumers who are interested in combat fitness but aren’t ready to jump directly into a boxing or Jiu-Jitsu class.

It also gives franchisees the ability to serve a broader range of fitness needs under one roof rather than relying on a single training modality.

As consumer expectations continue to evolve, UFC GYM is expanding that ecosystem further with recovery and wellness offerings designed to serve members beyond the workout itself.

Positioned for the Next Round of Fitness

Athletech News reports that UFC GYM has more than 171 locations and another 940 gyms in development, highlighting the scale of the brand’s global growth ambitions.

For entrepreneurs evaluating opportunities in fitness, the continued rise of combat sports adds another dimension to the UFC GYM franchise proposition: a differentiated fitness category benefiting from increasing mainstream awareness, paired with the global recognition of the UFC brand.
